Pros
Excellent Price Point

When customers search for the best food for their furry friends, they want the best quality they can find without having to break the bank. Purina Pro Plan does just that.

Fido will let you know when they dislike their food – they won’t eat it! But customers say that their dogs love the taste of Purina Pro Plan and are excited for meal time. With great taste and quality ingredients, this dog food is sure to provide your pup with the best of both worlds.
Skin Improvement
Our canine friends are used to having skin issues, just like humans. Certain ingredients can aggravate a dog’s skin and cause rashes and reactions. Customers reported that before trying Purina Pro Plan dog food, their dogs experienced rashes and severe itching. After trying Purina Pro Plan, the dogs saw no more rashes and the itching disappeared.
Cons
New Formula
Unfortunately, within the recent years, Purina changed its formula for many of their products, including the pro plan line. Customers have sent in reviews stating that their dogs loved the older formula but hate the new formula.
Sensitive Stomach Issues
Reviews on Amazon.com have stated that Purina Pro Plan has produced some stomach issues for puppies including gas, loose stools, and bad breath. While this was not a common complaint, it is something to be considered when giving your dog with sensitive stomach this particular dry dog food.

Yes my name is Lucy my told me to put my dog on this Pro Purina Pro Plan diet for sensitive skin and coats and the only problem that I have since my dog has started eating this dog food is he stays hungry all the time and he is bloated and laying around and he’s got gas build up really bad. My dog cannot have beef or chicken they think he has a reaction to that an allergy to that so I turned to this dog food because they said that they thought it was good for him and this is the only complaint I have
Need cat reviews switching them from fancy feast they all itch like monkeys cannot time it out very overwhelmed I’m trying your food and my one cat had uninary stones in her bladder she loves the chicken entree gravy they gave me science diet prescription hated it my vet said it was be k as long as she is eating it but why all my cats scratching and itching all inside cats told my vet so many times going to the vet this Friday with my other cat grace who ch I don’t think she pooped can’t see who poops what at times so fustrated
Goodness, for all the space you’ve used to advertise for Purina one would hope you would have some knowledge of the ingredients listed. Purina doesn’t make a quality food in any form; never have, never will. Their favorite ingredient is corn followed by other high carb fillers. There are so many better quality foods out there, don’t waste our money on this crap
Great comment. See mine below. If you ever get a chance to smell organic corn fertilizer you will think of this crappy dog food.
I agree Purina is a very profit driven company as they are owned by Nestle, a company that even caused international baby deaths do to false advertising & W.H.O. Had to be involved. They will cut corners anywhere they can, but have great media control so we often don’t hear about the illness of pets from high corn . Had my cats on the Purina Veterinarian Essentials, and it wasn’t essential at all. 65% corn. Cat developed a heart mur mur his left ventricular was severely damaged could be from low levels of taurine in this Purina product. Has to be on medication now forever. When I switched him off the Purina essentials his fur became thicker & silkier with 60 days. He’s much more playful too for a 5 year old cat!
People need to be mindful of ingredients in any dog food. That being said the PP Salmon and Rice Sensitive skin and stomach has no corn.
This food is not good. I got a new pup from an AKC breeder and was so surprised how bad her breath was. I switched to Core puppy dog food on day two of having her, which she liked immensely more, and within 3 days the bad breath was gone. I would like everyone to note that Proplan has corn in it and if anyone of you has ever used organic corn fertilizer (which I do on my lawn), it smells exactly like this dog food and the dog’s breath. Unbelievable.
Thank you for your post. I was trying to figure out why my puppy had such bad breath. This is the dog food that my breeder suggested I feed and I did not notice her breath until the second bag. I did not know if the Pro Plan had gone rancid because she had not eaten as well on this second bag as she did the first. I will give Core a try.
Please be careful. Please research DCM in dogs and grain free foods (any foods that contain lentil, peas, potatoes are suspect)….please do not feed grain free and read the ingredients. Please see the comment I left below. DCM is a silent killer.
Purina Pro Plan Focus is my favorite line of dog food for both adults and puppies. To the best of my knowledge, there’s no corn or wheat in any of their recipes in the Focus line.
I consider myself to be very knowledgeable about canine nutrition and highly recommend Pro Plan Focus. It’s one of the best mainstream brands on the market. All of my dogs love the taste and thrive on it.
I particularly recommend their salmon and rice formula for sensitive skin and stomach. It is one of my favorites for dogs with food allergies and itchy skin.
My dog was recently diagnosed with nutritional DCM. I fed her the “best food” I could buy….I would NEVER buy her Purina anything. Until her DCM diagnosis….caused by what I thought was the “best food”. I almost lost my dog (and she’s still not out of the woods yet). Per my vet AND veterinary cardiologist I immediately switch to Purina Pro Plan Sensitive Stomach Salmon and Rice and within a few weeks my dog was doing SO much better. This is one of the foods recommended to repair the hearts of DCM dogs. She is looking SO good and is getting back to her old self (even though she’s only 6!). Purina Pro Plan is very likely SAVING MY DOG’S life….and I will never feed her anything else. Please be careful with what you feed your dog. DCM is a silent killer.
The adult formulas of Purina cat food & some dog food are pverv50% corn and biologically inappropriate. Your pets may have an increased risk of obesity, diabetes heart murmurs or cancer! Please feed biologically appropriate food if you can afford to. Think Raw, Orijen, or N & D.
JASON: My dog HAD a heart murmur which is how we diagnosed her DCM. Her DCM was caused by a boutique brand like the ones you list. My dog is now part of a DCM study and most of the dogs were on foods from Orijen and N&D. Purina Pro Plan is HEALING her heart, and there is ZERO corn in it.
My dog also had a slew of issues and this dog food is healing her (proven by vet) please be Leary of boutique brands!!
